For many of us, the temptations we face at work are among the greatest challenges to eating healthy. Workplace cafeterias, break rooms, and vending areas can be the downfall of even the most nutrition-savvy employee.
If your place of work has a cafeteria, there is a good probability that it needs to turn a profit. The sad truth is that in many instances healthy foods do not sell as well as high-fat, high-calorie selections. The people running your cafeteria will focus on selling items that have a high profit margin and that move quickly.
If you have a hard time finding a healthy selection in your cafeteria, consider some of the following healthy eating options:
1.Try getting only vegetables instead of an entrée or starch. This will add bulk and nutrients to your diet and can make you feel full sooner.
2.Select a broth-based soup over a cream-based soup. A serving of cream-based soup can add extra fat and calories from the heavy cream and can have as much as 50 percent more calories than a broth-based soup.
3.When you crave something from the grill, select a grilled chicken sandwich or plain burger without all the toppings. Doing without that slice of cheese on your burger can save you 100 calories.
4.When you visit the salad bar, try to make your plate colorful with a variety of vegetables. Avoid items like olives, anchovies, cheese, and eggs which are sources of extra calories on a salad bar.
5.Try to select a low-calorie salad dressing and avoid the traditional creamy selections. If low-calorie dressings aren’t available, request oil and vinegar or consider bringing your own dressing from home.
6.If your cafeteria has a deli, order your sandwich without mayonnaise or condiments. Cafeteria servers tend to be heavy-handed; you have more control if you add your own condiments later.
7.Instead of selecting a high-calorie dessert like cheesecake or pie, opt for a low-fat selection like yogurt and fruit. This choice will add bulk and make you feel fuller.
